Joy Maxwell Nampitjlnpa is the daughter of two highly acclaimed & founding Papunya Tula artists, George Tjangala and Pantjiya Nungurrayi. George Tjangala was a keeper or custodian of the lands surrounding what is today known as Kintore. George and Pantjiya walked into Papunya in 1961. Joy was born at the Pintupi outstation of Kungkayunti near Papunya in 1963. The family then moved to Kintore when the township was established in 1981. Her Language Group is Pintupi and her Region is Haasts Bluff.
